Welcome to Second Grade!

In second grade students become more independent and their personalities become more gelled. Students start to explore their own interests as I try to deeper their understanding of the brain and metacognition. Students are held accountable for their actions and are taught routines and expectations through interactive modelingStudents are an active part in creating their second grade community. Academically, students start learning more comprehension reading strategies instead of learning how to figure out words in a text. Students look deeply at author's purpose and explore a wide variety of writing. Students participate in writing letters, opinions, persuasive letters, nonfiction responses to text, personal narratives, poetry and sometimes there is even time for folktales and fables. In math, students explore addition and subtraction strategies for numbers within the 100's, including making sense of number stories, as well as spending a lot of time coming up with strategies to help remember their math facts. Students also learn how to measure with tools based on the Metric System and the US Customary System. Students explore what it means to be a part of a community and use inquiry strategies to explore what school life was like in the past. Students are presented with opportunities, activities, and experiments to learn about matter, changes to the earth's surface, landforms, pollination, the needs of plants, and seed dispersal. Second grade is filled with time for learning, time for play, as well as time to learn how to be a student, friend, and a global citizen.
